What Is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)?
A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a regulated healthcare professional in British Columbia. RMTs complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical training and must be registered with the College of Massage Therapists of BC (CMTBC).
Because RMTs are regulated, their services are covered by most extended health insurance plans. This is different from non-registered massage practitioners, whose services are generally not covered by insurance.
All massage therapists at Affinity Wellness hold active CMTBC registration.
More Than Just Relaxation
The benefits of registered massage therapy go well beyond a feeling of calm after your session.
Massage therapy works by stimulating the nervous system, balancing the body’s stress response, and increasing circulation to injured or tense tissues. This leads to real, measurable changes — reduced pain, improved mobility, and faster recovery.
Our RMTs use a range of hands-on techniques depending on your needs:
Targets deeper muscle layers to release chronic tension and adhesions
Addresses restrictions in the connective tissue surrounding muscles
Applies focused pressure to release knotted muscle tissue
Uses flowing strokes to improve circulation and promote relaxation
Treats areas of reduced blood flow, nerve compression, and postural imbalanc
Supports pregnancy comfort and addresses postural changes
Relieves jaw tension, headaches, and chewing muscle pain
Each session is built around your goals — not a one-size-fits-all routine.

Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage – to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just make you feel good. But it’s also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies. Therapists who are trained in prenatal massage adjust their techniques accordingly. Talk to your therapist if your breasts are too tender or you’re suffering from nausea or congestion. You may prefer a side-lying position.
How do you lie on the table?
For maximum comfort, our therapists use prenatal cushions, consisting of several adjustable pieces, designed to support a growing belly and enlarged breasts. Talk to your therapist if your breasts are too tender or you’re suffering from nausea or congestion. You may prefer a side-lying position.
Benefits of Prenatal Massage
Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, so that your pelvic joints are less stable, and changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you’re carrying and you may find you have an aching lower back. A trained prenatal massage therapist knows where a pregnant woman’s sore spots are likely to be and may be able to provide some relief.
TMJ Massage
The jaw, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is a major target for an array of joint disorders. Massage therapy is an ideal modality to relieve TMJ pain by focusing on the reduction of tension in the masticatory muscles, releasing tension in fascia, and elimination of trigger points.
Temporomandibular joint disorders, more commonly known as TMJ disorders, are usually the result of inflamed and painful chewing muscles around your jaw. For some, it’s a once-in-a-while issue that can come from too much chewing, like indulging in a piece of gum all afternoon. For others, however, TMJ disorder can be a chronic issue that results in constant pain and discomfort.
The cause for this chronic condition is relatively subjective, but may be linked to stress fractures, an imperfect bite, tooth grinding, or tooth clenching related to stress. Luckily, a TMJ massage can act as an effective, non-medicinal way to deal with TMJ pain. Here are three specific therapies that can help you address the underlying issues no matter what the cause.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage therapy is the modality that comes to mind when most people think about massage.
As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart.
But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, and improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.
Neuromuscular Therapy
A soft tissue manual therapy technique used to treat areas with decreased blood flow, trigger points, nerve entrapment and/or compression, and postural dysfunction. The goal of NMT is to achieve a balance between the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, resulting in decreased pain and dysfunction.
Myofacial Release
Myofascial release is a technique used to treat restrictions or specific areas in myofascial connective tissue. This may be the result of pain derived from trauma, inflammation or dysfunction. The term “fascia” refers to the connective tissue that connects all of our muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, joints, organs, and central nervous system. The release of adhesions or tension in the fascia reduces physical or trauma-based pain.
Trigger Point Massage Therapy
Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the application of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body. It may also be called myofascial (myo meaning muscle and fascial meaning connective tissue) trigger point therapy. Trigger point therapy is sometimes part of a group of treatment approaches called neuromuscular therapy, or NMT.
ART (Only With Frances Russell)
Active Release Techniques (ART), is a patented soft-tissue treatment system that treats problems associated with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.
This non-invasive, hands-on technique can simultaneously locate and break up scar tissue, vastly improving overuse and strain/sprain injuries. By breaking and releasing restrictive adhesions, ART can restore mobility, increasing circulatory function and neurological function.

Registered Massage Therapy in Kelowna — FAQs
What is the difference between an RMT and a non-registered massage therapist?
An RMT is a regulated healthcare professional in BC, registered with the College of Massage Therapists of BC (CMTBC). RMTs complete 3,000+ hours of clinical training and are eligible for insurance billing. Non-registered therapists may have some training but are not regulated and are generally not covered by extended health plans. At Affinity, we offer both — our RMTs for therapeutic and insurance-eligible care, and our relaxation practitioners for wellness-focused sessions.
Is registered massage therapy covered by insurance in BC?
Yes. RMT services are covered by most extended health benefit plans in BC. Coverage amounts and limits vary by plan, so we recommend checking your policy. We offer direct billing to most major insurers to make the process easy.
Does ICBC cover massage therapy after a car accident?
Yes. If you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident in BC, ICBC covers registered massage therapy as part of your recovery. Affinity Wellness bills ICBC directly — you don’t need to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement.
Do I need a referral to see an RMT in Kelowna?
No. You can book directly with one of our RMTs without a doctor’s referral. Some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage, so it’s worth checking your policy before your first visit.
What should I expect at my first massage therapy appointment?
Your therapist will start by asking about your health history, any areas of concern, and what you’re hoping to get out of the session. They’ll explain their plan, check in about pressure throughout, and ensure you’re comfortable at all times. You’ll be draped with sheets — only the area being worked on will be uncovered. Speak up at any point if you’d like more or less pressure, or if anything doesn’t feel right.
How many massage therapy sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition and goals. Acute injuries often improve noticeably within 3–5 sessions. Chronic conditions or ongoing stress management may benefit from regular monthly treatments. Your RMT will give you a personalized recommendation at your first appointment.
What is prenatal massage and is it safe?
Prenatal massage is a specialized treatment designed to support the physical changes of pregnancy. It addresses back pain, hip tension, swelling, and postural strain. At Affinity Wellness, prenatal massage is performed by therapists with specific training in pregnancy care. It is generally safe from the second trimester onwards for healthy pregnancies — always let your therapist know how far along you are.
What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage tCan massage therapy help with anxiety, stress, or sleep problems?argets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using slower, firmer strokes. It’s designed to release chronic muscle tension, break up adhesions, and support injury recovery. It can feel more intense than a relaxation massage but should never be painful. If the pressure is too much, always let your therapist know.
Can massage therapy help with anxiety, stress, or sleep problems?
Yes. Massage therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s “rest and recover” mode — and reduces cortisol, the primary stress hormone. It also increases serotonin and dopamine. Many patients notice improved sleep quality, reduced anxiety, and better mood with regular treatment.
What is TMJ massage and what does it treat?
TMJ massage targets the muscles around the jaw and temporomandibular joint. It’s used to relieve jaw pain, headaches, tooth grinding, and tension caused by TMJ disorders. Treatment focuses on releasing tight chewing muscles and the surrounding fascia.
How do I book a massage therapy appointment in Kelowna?
You can book online 24/7 through our online booking system, or call us at (778) 478-0548. No referral needed. We offer direct billing for most extended health plans and ICBC.
