Registered Dietitian FAQs
What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
A Registered Dietitian is a regulated health professional who specializes in food, nutrition, and medical nutrition therapy. Becoming an RD requires completing a minimum four‑year accredited university degree (either a Bachelor of Science Degree or a Master’s Degree), a year-long supervised internship or practicum, and a national registration exam. Dietitians must also complete ongoing continuing education to maintain their license and stay current with the latest research.
In addition to their clinical training, dietitians are skilled at translating complex nutrition science into clear, practical guidance that clients can understand and apply in everyday life. Because the profession is regulated, RDs are held to strict standards of practice, ethics, and accountability. This ensures you receive safe, evidence‑based nutrition care tailored to your health needs.
What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?
The title “Registered Dietitian” is legally protected, meaning only individuals who meet specific education, practicum, and licensing requirements can use it (see FAQ #1). In contrast, the term “nutritionist” is not regulated in many provinces and states — meaning anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, regardless of training or credentials. Choosing a Registered Dietitian ensures you’re working with a qualified expert who has completed standardized, science‑based training and is accountable to a regulatory college.
What does a dietitian help with?
Dietitians support people with a wide range of goals and health concerns, including (but not limited to):
- Healthy eating and lifestyle changes
- Digestive issues and gut health (such as IBS, IBD, reflux, bloating, and inconsistent bowel movements, such as constipation or diarrhea)
- Heart health, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic diseases
- Food allergies and intolerances
- Weight concerns
- Women’s health, including PCOS, pregnancy/postpartum, and perimenopausal nutrition
- Plant-forward dietary patterns
- Sports and performance nutrition
Because RDs are trained in clinical and medical nutrition therapy, they can interpret lab results, collaborate with your healthcare team, and create personalized plans based on your medical history and health goals.
What happens during a first appointment?
A first appointment typically lasts 60 minutes and includes a detailed assessment of your health history, symptoms, eating patterns, lifestyle, and goals. Your dietitian will explain how nutrition relates to your concerns and begin developing a personalized plan. Follow‑up sessions are usually shorter and focus on progress, troubleshooting challenges, and adjusting your plan as needed.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a dietitian?
In most cases, no referral is required — you can book directly with a dietitian. Some insurance plans or specialized medical programs may request a referral, but for private practice services, you can usually self‑refer at any time.
How much does it cost to see a dietitian?
Fees vary depending on location, experience, and appointment length. Initial assessments typically cost more because they involve a full health and nutrition review. While dietitian services are not usually covered by MSP, many extended health benefits and workplace insurance plans include dietitian coverage. If you do not have extended health benefits that cover dietitian services, the expenses can be claimed as tax-deductible.
How do I choose the right dietitian for me?
Look for someone with the RD credential, which confirms they are licensed and regulated. It’s also helpful to choose a dietitian who specializes in your specific concerns — for example, digestive health, sports nutrition, women’s health, or chronic disease management. A brief consultation or reviewing their website can help you determine whether their approach and communication style feel like a good fit.
Are virtual dietitian appointments effective?
Yes. Virtual nutrition care has been shown to be just as effective as in‑person appointments for most people. It offers flexibility, convenience, and access to specialized care regardless of where you live. Many clients find virtual sessions easier to fit into their schedule and appreciate being able to meet from home.
How long does it take to see results when working with a dietitian?
The timeline varies depending on your goals, health conditions, and how much change you’re ready to make. Some people notice improvements in energy, digestion, or eating habits within a few weeks, while more complex health concerns may take longer. Dietitians focus on sustainable, realistic progress, not quick fixes — which means the changes you make are more likely to last. Regular follow‑ups help keep you on track and allow your plan to evolve as your needs change.
Will I receive a meal plan from a dietitian?
Some dietitians provide sample meal ideas or general frameworks, but most do not create strict, prescriptive meal plans — and for good reason. Research shows that rigid meal plans are not sustainable long‑term. They often fail to teach the skills needed to make flexible, confident food choices in real‑life situations such as travel, social events, changing schedules, or fluctuating appetite.
Instead of handing you a plan to follow, a Registered Dietitian focuses on helping you build lasting habits, understand your body’s needs, and develop practical strategies that fit your lifestyle. If structure is helpful for you, your dietitian can discuss meal planning techniques that allow you to incorporate balanced meals into your week while maintaining flexibility and enjoyment around food.
Is dietitian support covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans include dietitian coverage. Coverage varies by plan.
Do you offer weight loss programs?
Our dietitian supports nutritional health and sustainable habits rather than restrictive dieting or
quick-fix weight loss plans.
