What Is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare profession in British Columbia. Physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat conditions affecting muscles, joints, nerves, and the pelvic floor. They use hands-on therapy, tailored exercise programs, and patient education to reduce pain, restore movement, and prevent re-injury.

All physiotherapists at Affinity Wellness are registered with the College of Physical Therapists of BC (CPTBC) and maintain active practice registration. You do not need a doctor’s referral to book an appointment.

  • Neck and back pain and stiffness
  • Sciatica and nerve impingement
  • Sports injuries — ankle sprains, knee injuries, shoulder pain
  • Concussions and post-concussion syndrome
  • Whiplash and motor vehicle accident recovery
  • Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement
  • Arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Overuse injuries — carpal tunnel syndrome, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction — incontinence, pelvic pain, prolapse
  • Pre- and post-natal pelvic health conditions
  • Pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Headaches, dizziness, and vertigo
  • Chronic pain and fibromyalgia

Not sure if your condition qualifies? Call or email us — we’re happy to help you figure out the right next step.

  • Shockwave therapy — see below
  • Taping and bracing

Dry Needling (IMS)

Dry needling — sometimes called intramuscular stimulation (IMS) — is a technique used by specially trained physiotherapists to treat muscle pain and trigger points.

What does dry needling treat?

  • Chronic back and neck pain
  • Tension and migraine headaches
  • Hip, shoulder, and knee pain
  • Tennis elbow and tendinitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Whiplash
  • Sports injuries
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

What to expect:

Dry needling — sometimes called intramuscular stimulation (IMS) — is a technique used by specially trained physiotherapists to treat muscle pain and trigger points.

Dry Needling – What to Expect:

A very thin, solid needle is inserted into a tight or dysfunctional muscle. This often causes a brief “twitch” response, which signals the muscle is releasing. Most patients experience significant relief after just a few treatments. Our physiotherapists who perform dry needling have completed specialized post-graduate training in this technique.

Dry needling is different from traditional acupuncture — it is grounded in Western anatomy and neuroscience, and is performed by a licensed physiotherapist.

Concussion Rehabilitation

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a sudden impact to the head or body. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, light sensitivity, and balance problems.

Physiotherapy plays an important role in concussion recovery — particularly for symptoms that persist beyond the first few weeks. Our physiotherapists can help with:

  • Vestibular rehabilitation (dizziness and balance)
  • Cervicogenic headache treatment
  • Return-to-sport and return-to-work planning
  • Education and activity pacing strategies

If you’ve had a head injury or have been diagnosed with a concussion, speak to your doctor and ask for a physiotherapy referral — or book directly with our team.

Physiotherapy in Kelowna — FAQs

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare profession in BC. Physiotherapists assess and treat conditions affecting muscles, joints, nerves, and the pelvic floor. They use hands-on therapy, exercise prescription, and education to reduce pain, restore movement, and prevent re-injury. All physiotherapists in BC are registered with the College of Physical Therapists of BC (CPTBC).

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in BC?

No. In British Columbia, you can book directly with a physiotherapist without a referral. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage — check your policy before your first visit.

What happens at my first physiotherapy appointment?

Your first visit includes a detailed assessment of your movement, strength, and the affected area. Your physiotherapist will ask about your health history, current symptoms, and goals. They’ll explain what they find and start treatment the same day when appropriate. Expect the first session to take about 45 minutes.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the area being treated — shorts for knee or hip work, a tank top or sleeveless shirt for shoulder treatment. Your physiotherapist will let you know if anything specific is needed when you book.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition and how your body responds to treatment. Many patients see meaningful improvement within 4–6 sessions. Acute injuries often resolve faster, while chronic conditions or post-surgical recovery may take longer. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment.

What is the difference between physiotherapy and chiropractic care?

Both treat musculoskeletal pain, but with different approaches. Physiotherapists focus on movement rehabilitation, exercise prescription, and hands-on soft tissue therapy. Chiropractors focus on spinal alignment, joint mobility, and nervous system function — often using adjustments as a core tool. At Affinity Wellness, our physio and chiro teams work collaboratively, and many patients benefit from both.

Is physiotherapy covered by insurance in BC?

Most extended health plans in BC cover physiotherapy. ICBC covers physiotherapy after a motor vehicle accident. MSP (BC’s provincial plan) does not typically cover physiotherapy for most adults. Affinity Wellness offers direct billing to most major insurers.

Does ICBC cover physiotherapy after a car accident?

Yes. If you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident in BC, ICBC covers physiotherapy as part of your recovery. Affinity Wellness bills ICBC directly — you don’t need to pay upfront.

What is dry needling and is it the same as acupuncture?

Dry needling is a technique used by trained physiotherapists to treat muscle pain and trigger points using thin needles. Unlike traditional acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is based on Western anatomy and neuroscience. At Affinity, dry needling is performed only by physiotherapists with specialized post-graduate training.
